Attach files and images

Add a project file, any file, an image or your last screenshot to a message, and see what it costs before you send.

Checked on Desktop 0.1.19

A newer version is out (Desktop 0.1.25): some details may differ.

The + in the composer does one thing: it attaches something to a message. Pasting and dragging work too.

  1. In the composer, press + and choose where it comes from:
    • a file of the project — from this session’s folder;
    • a file from the disk — any file of your computer;
    • an image — a photo or a diagram to look at;
    • your last screenshot.
  2. Look at the cost shown next to each attachment: an estimate, in tokens.
  3. Send.

An image must finish uploading before you send. If you send too early, TALOS tells you the image was not uploaded and asks you to attach it again, instead of sending an empty reference.

An attachment stays in the context of every message that follows, not only the one you attach it to. A long file is paid again and again.

  • Up to 10 attachments per message.
  • Up to 200,000 characters per attachment — about 50,000 tokens, half a window for one file.
  • The estimate is an order of magnitude; the model counts the real number when it receives the message.

If an attachment is heavy, remove it or replace it with the part that matters.

Two other ways keep a document within reach without paying for it at every message:

  • a file of instructions in the project, which the model reads with every message — see Project instructions;
  • the Library, which the model opens only when it needs a file.
  • You cannot add another one — the message already has ten.
  • The conversation suddenly costs more — look at what you attached: a large attachment stays in the context of the messages that follow.
