Call TALOS from anywhere

Make TALOS the phone’s assistant, choose the gesture or keys that open it, turn on “hey TALOS”, and use the bar over any app.

Checked on Android 0.1.38

A newer version is out (Android 0.1.40): some details may differ.

Everything here is in Settings → Phone control, under How you call it. Each way shows whether it works right now — Ready, Try it, Role missing or Not set yet — and the button that sets it.

Most ways of calling TALOS go through Android’s assistant, so start here.

  1. Tap Make TALOS the assistant. Android does not let an app switch this by itself, so TALOS opens the page where you choose.
  2. On that page, tap Default digital assistant app and choose TALOS.
  3. Come back: the row updates by itself.

If neither Android nor TALOS could set it, do it by hand: Settings → Apps → Default apps → Digital assistant in the phone’s own settings. If that list is empty, connect the bridge and try again.

Way When it works
Press and hold the power button Opens the phone’s assistant — but the phone decides whether to route the gesture.
Swipe in from the screen corner The swipe from the bottom corner, if you navigate by gestures.
Press and hold Home If you navigate with three buttons: hold the middle one.
Press and hold both volume keys Goes straight to TALOS, skipping the assistant. Android asks you to confirm the first time.

The volume-key shortcut is an Accessibility shortcut, and there is one per phone: if another service takes it, TALOS loses it.

Say “hey TALOS” and it opens. The wake word is recognized on the phone, by a small local model: no audio leaves the phone just to notice that you called.

  1. Tap Turn on “hey TALOS”.
  2. The first time, TALOS asks to act on its own: talking without touching the screen means it cannot stop to show you a card. Accepting sets the three powers — read, write and off-device — to always allow. Before anything that cannot be undone — deleting, sending, calling — it still says so out loud and waits for your answer.
  3. The microphone stays on to wait for the word, transcribing nothing. A notification says so, and turns it off.

To stop, tap Stop waiting for the word, or use the notification. To take the powers back, set them again in Agent Tools.

Once TALOS is the assistant, calling it from any app opens a bar over that app instead of taking you away:

  • it can see the screen you are on, and says how much of it — “I can see your screen”, with the number of elements;
  • you write or speak, and attach photos, a camera shot, a file, or something from your Library;
  • you can switch the model;
  • Open in TALOS continues the conversation in the app.
