Turn on web search

Choose the service that answers TALOS’s searches, give it a key or an address, and allow the query to leave the phone.

Checked on Android 0.1.38

A newer version is out (Android 0.1.40): some details may differ.

TALOS has no index of the web, so it asks a search service. Only the query leaves the phone; the pages themselves are downloaded and read on the phone, and their sources saved in your Library.

Open Settings → Search engine and pick one:

Service What it needs Worth knowing
Tavily An API key 1,000 searches a month at no cost, no card required. Built for agents.
Brave Search An API key An independent index; a card is required. Brave does not let TALOS save its results, so TALOS opens the sources it uses instead.
SearXNG Your instance’s address No third party sees the query. Turn on JSON output in the instance’s settings, or TALOS gets a web page back.
Custom endpoint An address Any search API that answers with a top-level results list.
DuckDuckGo Nothing No key and no account; not an official API, so under heavy use it can answer with a block — and TALOS says so.

Paste the key, or the address, and save it. The panel then says where things stand: Ready, a key or an address still needed, or blocked by a permission.

A search sends its words off the phone, so it needs the off-device power, in Settings → Agent Tools:

  • on Ask me every time, the first search asks, and you can grant it once or for good;
  • on Always allow, searches run without asking;
  • on Never allow, no search runs — even with a key saved.

Search and page reading also save their sources in the Library, so they need Create or change things as well.

Turn web search off removes the service: TALOS stops offering web search to the model. Forget the key removes the key from the phone; turning search back on then needs a new one.
