Back up and restore

Export everything into one file encrypted with a passphrase, keep it where you choose, and bring it back — merging, replacing or skipping what is already there.

Checked on Android 0.1.38

A newer version is out (Android 0.1.40): some details may differ.

Your data lives only on the phone — see Your data on the phone. A backup is how you take it with you: to a new phone, or across a reinstall. It is one file, encrypted, saved where you choose, so it stays even if you uninstall TALOS.

  1. Open Settings → Backup and restore.
  2. Under Export, choose a passphrase you will remember. Without it the backup will not open, and it cannot be recovered — not even TALOS knows it.
  3. Decide whether to Include provider keys. You will need them after a reinstall — but the file then is a key: keep it like one.
  4. Tap Export and choose where to save, and pick the place.

The backup holds your chats and their messages and attachments, the Library, notes, tasks, memory, researches and settings — and the provider keys, if you included them. Before handing the file over, TALOS reads it back; if it does not read back the same, it says which part and does not hand it over. When it is done, it says how many rows it saved, and the size.

  1. Open Settings → Backup and restore, and under Restore tap Choose a backup file.
  2. Enter its passphrase.
  3. Choose what to do with what is already on the phone:
    • Merge — combine the two;
    • Replace — the backup wins;
    • Skip existing — keep what is here, add only what is missing.
  4. Tap See what it would do. TALOS shows where the backup comes from — the device and the date — and how many rows would be overwritten, before anything changes.
  5. Tap Restore to apply it.

Deleting a memory removes it from the phone, not from a backup exported before: that backup still holds a copy. The same is true of anything else you delete after exporting.
