Lock TALOS with a PIN

Turn on the app lock, whose PIN encrypts your chats and documents; unlock with biometrics; keep TALOS out of screenshots and the app switcher.

Checked on Android 0.1.38

A newer version is out (Android 0.1.40): some details may differ.

With the app lock on, TALOS asks for a PIN when it starts, and that PIN is the key that encrypts your chats and documents on the phone. Without it, they can be read by anyone with access to the phone. Why that matters is in Your data on the phone.

  1. Open Settings → Account, and under App lock turn on Require PIN on start.
  2. Choose a PIN of at least 6 digits, not a predictable one, and confirm it.
  3. Keep TALOS open while it locks your data with the new key — this happens once.

If you forget the PIN, the data is lost for good. There is no recovery — not for you, and not for anyone else. The PIN never leaves the phone. A backup, which has its own passphrase, is the only copy that does not depend on it.

Enter the PIN. After too many wrong attempts, TALOS makes you wait before you can try again.

Unlock with biometrics lets a fingerprint or your face open TALOS. The PIN is still the key: enter it once after turning biometrics on, and biometrics work from then on. The biometric key stays in the phone’s secure hardware and never reaches TALOS itself.

Hide in app switcher and block screenshots stops Android from capturing TALOS: no screenshots, no screen recording, and a blank card in recent apps.

Turning Require PIN on start off asks for the current PIN first. A PIN shorter than the current 6-digit minimum, set by an older version, can be replaced by turning the lock off and on again.
