Run a deep research

Ask one question, review the plan before anything is spent, choose the writer and the checker, follow the run, and read a report whose every claim is checked.

Checked on Android 0.1.38

A newer version is out (Android 0.1.40): some details may differ.

A deep research takes one question, reads many pages, keeps the passages it relies on, and writes a report in which every claim is checked against its source. It searches the web, so set up web search first; it takes minutes, so let TALOS keep working in the background.

  1. Open Research from the menu and tap New research.
  2. Write the question, and choose a reading depth: Quick, Deep or Exhaustive.
  3. Tap Draw up the plan. TALOS proposes the lines of enquiry, with how many searches and pages, about how long, and about how many tokens. Change it before anything is spent: add a line, remove one, or draw it up again.

A research uses two models, and you choose both:

  • Writes the report — by default, whatever the composer is set to;
  • Checks the citations — by default, automatic, preferring a model on the phone.

The writer never checks its own work: a model judging its own output is more lenient. The checker works one citation at a time, so a small model suits it — and one on the phone costs nothing and sends nothing. When both come from the same provider, TALOS says the guarantee is weaker. When the provider publishes its prices, TALOS shows an estimate of the cost.

A model on the phone can write the report too, sending nothing out; at deeper depths that takes a long time, and the screen says so.

Tap Start.

The research says what it is doing — working out the plan, looking for sources, reading the pages, checking the claims, writing the report — and how many sections are done.

  • Pause saves the step under way and stops. Resume carries on from there.
  • Cancel the research finishes the step already under way, keeps what it gathered, and starts no more: it will not resume.

A research that ended without a report says why, and what to do: a refused permission (resume with the right one), a run that ran out of turns, or a report written but not readable (resume, and it is written again — the gathering stays).

The report opens on its sections, its claims and its sources. Every claim carries the passage it rests on, checked twice — that the passage is really in the source, and that it really supports the claim — and a verdict: supported, partial, contested, contradicted or unchecked.

  • Talk about it in a chat opens a conversation with the report.
  • Ask this research more follows up on the same question.
  • Export it as a Full report, a one-page Brief or an Evidence dossier in PDF; its sources as BibTeX or RIS; or the raw text as Markdown.
