Install the CLI
Install talos-code from npm, run it in a project, and know where it keeps your data.
Checked on CLI 0.1.0
A newer version is out (CLI 0.5.2): some details may differ.
Requirements
Section titled “Requirements”- Node.js 24, version 24.18 or later in the 24 line.
- Tested on Windows 11 x64. macOS and Linux are not tested yet in 0.1.0.
Install
Section titled “Install”The npm package is talos-code; the command it installs is talos.
npm i -g talos-codetalos --versionThe first run
Section titled “The first run”Open a terminal in a project and run:
talosThe first time, TALOS asks whether to trust the folder, then which provider and model to use. A key already in your
environment (for example OPENAI_API_KEY) is used only after you agree once; otherwise you type it in hidden input
and it is kept in the operating system’s credential store, never in a file.
One-shot tasks and scripts
Section titled “One-shot tasks and scripts”For a single task, without the interactive screen:
talos -p "inspect this repository and explain the failing tests"For machine-readable output, add --json (or --output-format stream-json):
talos -p "summarize the changes" --jsonUpdates
Section titled “Updates”talos update --checkWith an npm install, talos update tells you when a newer version exists and prints the command to run
(npm i -g talos-code@latest). It changes nothing by itself.
Your data
Section titled “Your data”Nothing is sent anywhere except your prompts and the files TALOS reads, to the provider you chose; the public model
catalog at models.dev, for context windows and prices, cached for 4 hours; and the npm registry, only when you run
talos update. There is no telemetry.
- Configuration:
%APPDATA%\TALOS-CLIon Windows,~/.config/talos-clion macOS and Linux. - Sessions, checkpoints and logs:
%LOCALAPPDATA%\TALOS-CLIon Windows,~/.local/state/talos-clion macOS and Linux.
To turn off the models.dev catalog: talos config set catalog.modelsDev false, or TALOS_MODELS_DEV=off.
Known limits in 0.1.0
Section titled “Known limits in 0.1.0”- Only Windows 11 x64 is tested.
- Context compaction with a local Ollama model is not yet verified end to end.
- A local provider that answers 401 or 403 without needing a key can be set aside as if its key were wrong.
